    I saw a UA-cam Video some time ago where a successful young woman was using Straw Bales to grow flowers and Vegetables...however I can't access it again. She mentioned she was using approx. 120 Bales a year and preparing them using commercial Nitrogen products.....expensive !!!!!!!! Not having easy access to such product where I live I experimented using locally sourced seasoned [perhaps 3+ month old] Chicken Manure. Initially I spread a good amount over the surface of each Bale every few days in Spring for about 2 weeks and watered well daily trying to get as much into the Bale as I could by puncturing it with a stick. In hindsight I should have used my Line Trimmer to shred the sometimes lumpy manure and then soaked it for some days prior to use making it easier for it to penetrate. I planted Vegetables about a month after starting the treatment and grew some nice produce at no cost.

    I believe he meant to say geographically challenged ,not economically challenged...about growers in other parts of the world...Straw bail gardening is very versatile and offer growers with very poor soil quality the option of growing in an alternative organic sustrate when growing in their soil just isnt an option..great video, my wife says im too passionate about my gardening but honestly i dont think im passionate enough ...lol..i guess when im finally sleeping out there i will have reached the pinnacle of my gardening obsession...Happy Growing and Merry Christmas America🇺🇸👍

    This is my first time try at straw bale gardening. I’m on my 9th day and my bales aren’t getting hot. I’m doing 30-0-3 fertilizer on them every other day. I’m also watering everyday. I checked them today with thermometer and their internal temperature of 73 degrees. What am I doing wrong.

      Soak the bales for three days before you begin. Don’t use city water. Use rain water or pond water, Water every day and fertilizer every other day, and increasing the amount of fertilizer might help.

      I agree. This is too complicated. Just put the seed in the ground and cover with straw, simple.

    I have a question. I've been constructing a massive garden in my backyard to the tune of 100 straw bales and up to this point I've been excited to try out something on such a large scale. I just read a very alarmist article about herbicides being used on straw that can kill any plant you try growing in them. Help! How do I know if I have contaminated bales? I'm starting to panic at the thought of a lost season and waste of time, money, and planning brainpower. Help help helpppppp

      Wow, that's a huge undertaking! I would first try calling your source. Whoever sold the straw bales to you should be able to tell you definitively whether or not any herbicides were used on the crops. If that doesn't work, your local county Extension office and/or Master Gardeners could tell you if testing is available in your area. It may cost you a big time delay though.

      I read that some spray glyphosate on straw and hay, just before cutting! They do that so it is easier on the equipment that cuts it. I would not want glyphosate to be in my growing medium.

      I have never heard of anyone spraying anything on fields before cutting. I have been around farming most of my life.

      Straw (not hay) has often been treated because they are from grain crops that do indeed get sprayed with chemicals that can harm anything you plant. The only way to know if yours has been treated would be to go back to the purchase source and ask, if possible. Good luck.

      You have No worries buddy as long as the straw has been cut gor more than about a month the herbecide/pesticide has had enough time to break down..most wheat farms use 2,4D and the half life of it is around 2 weeks..after that the herbacide has broken down and is no longer a threat to your germination rates...

    We live in the deep south and straw bales are kind of non existent so we are doing hay bales

    • @cynthiawelch3628
      @cynthiawelch3628 7 років тому

      Hay comes with some issues. First, it is much more likely to have lots of unwanted seeds that will grow unwanted plants in your bales. Second, it does not have the same vital wicking capabilities as straw so getting and keeping your bales wet may be a challenge. Also, lots of animals like to eat hay since it is cut from food sources so watch out for rabbits and other critters feasting in your garden. Straw is not a food source, it is only used for bedding. In Joel Karsten's most recent book, he explains a process for creating your own bales even without straw. Good luck.

      Hay will work. Usually more weed seeds is a side effect. C.W. is right, they won't "wick" as well. They also wont dry out as fast and the green matter decomposing in them is nitrogen rich. They condition faster, but don't last quite as long. Easily good for one season, then compost the remains.

    What makes me sick about this city is the corrupt court system and human services are and there is nothing this city council does about it. Funny. What a joke.
